Momento - Title sequence

Momento is a thriller staring Guy Pierce as Leonard who tries to find the murderer who killed his wife. The title sequence starts with an indent of 'New market' s logo and a bright flash under it. This is a production/distribution company who are supporting the film.  A few seconds later 'NEWMARKET presents' comes up on the screen, again mentioning one of the companies that support the film. Next in the title sequence credits is ' Summit Entertainment presents'. Summit Entertainment is another production/distribution company that is involved with the movie.

'A Team Todd production' flashes up next , which is a production company. The purpose of having these companies mentioned at the start of the film is to let the audience know who is involved with the making/distribution of the film. Also if the audience has seen and enjoyed films made by the company this will make them more interested in watching the movie.Below is a grid showing the first 20 seconds of the title sequence and what appears at certain seconds :

The name of the director is mentioned next : A film by Christopher Nolan. This again lets the audience know that a very reputable director has made the film and will make people more interested and continue watching the film. Then the list of main actors are shown, they are :
  • Guy Pearce
  • Carrie-Ann Moss
  • Joe Pantoliano

Then at 0:39 the film title is shown to the audience, in the same text and colour as the previous pieces of text. This is where the film starts and we see a hand holding a photo but the picture is fading and we can see that it is being shown in reverse. This is shown from 0:41 - 1:53 along with the names of the secondary cast (which stop being mentioned at 1:00) , they are :
  • Mark Boone Junior
  • Stephen Tobolowsky
  • Harriet Sansom Harris
  • Callum Keith Rennie
  • Larry Holden
After this the names and roles of the crew are shown:
  • Casting
  • Music
  • Costume Designer
  • Editor
  • Production Designer
  • Director of Photography
  • Co-Producer
  • Co-Executive Producers
  • Executive Producers
  • Producers
The credits go on and state that Christopher Nolan also wrote the screenplay and that the film is based on a short story by Jonathan Nolan. Then it is again mentioned that Christopher Nolan had directed the film. The first scene then starts ( the scene is being played in reverse). The photo has now disolved and the person holding it puts it back into the camera, we see them taking the photo and by the clothing we can identify that it is a male as he is wearing a suit. There is then a shot of his face, few smears of blood are visible on his face.

There is then a close ups of blood running along the floor , the shell of a bullet ,a pair of glasses and a the back of a head. Next is a low angle shot of the killers gun going back into his hand. The bullet shell then goes back into the gun and the glasses replace themselves on the victims face. He then gets shot. The music throughout the opening started off orchestiral when the credits were on the screen. It then changed when the photo was taken , becoming less loud and more atmospheric. During this we also get heightened noises, such as the camera, the gun being held, the shell on the floor and the victim screaming. The music comes to a climax just before he gets shot.
